The Palio of Siena is usually held twice a year: July 2nd, Palio of July in honor of the Madonna of Provenzano and August 16th, Palio of August in honor of the Madonna of the Assumption.
The "Career", as it is traditionally called the race, is a competition between “Contrade” (each of the seventeen historical divisions within the medieval walls of the city) in the form of a carousel horse of medieval origin.
The history of the Palio of Siena is very detailed and complex and has its roots in an age still more remote. In Italian cities of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries it was the custom to organize horse racing, both as a public spectacle, both as a competition between the various horse farms owned by the noble citizens. These origins ideally represent the various pageants that still take place in Italy.
The Palio race is named, not only in Siena, for the prize: the Palio from the Latin pallium (woolen cloak) which was usually a cloth of very fine cloth that was used for different purposes. The race, one of the eldest in the world, takes place in the central square of Siena, Piazza del Campo, unique for its original shell shape and renowned throughout the world for its beauty and architectural integrity. For an old convention the square and the Palazzo Pubblico do not belong to any Contrada.
We propose our customers to watch this fascinating and exciting event from a private and exclusive balcony.
The balcony is located on the curve of San Martino, the entry will be allowed to 36 people max. You will be giving a standing room (no seats) and will be required to access to the building by 4pm. The preparatory phase will last about two hours and the race will start around 7pm. You can leave the building only after the conclusion of the race.
In case of rain or bad weather the Palio could be postponed to the following day (very rare case), in that case you will be guaranteed throughout the event, but we will not be granted a refund in case of the client no show.
During the event, a buffet and free open bar (wine, beers, cocktails, soft drinks, coffee - not included spirits) will be offered to our customers. The balcony is located in a building provided with free basic services (toilets, chairs, tables) and a fee-paying bar.
In case of rain or bad weather the Palio could be postponed to the following day (very rare case).
Program:
- 13.00: Welcome drink
- 14:00: benediction of the horse
- 15:00: historic parade
- 16:00: entrance in Piazza del Campo in your assigned place
NOTE: It is possible to arrive at 16:00, it is not obligatory to arrive at 13:00 to be present at the ceremony.
