This gastronomical tour will be in the district of Rione Monti, a place rich in monuments and churches, considered the most beautiful and characteristic area that you can find off the beaten path in Rome. It is a hidden jewel nestled among Venice Square, The Forums and the Colosseum. Monti has a wonderful medieval feel with its mazes of roads and alleys, all filled with small family-run shops, restaurants, and bars you can enjoy. On your Rome Pizza and Food Tour, you'll learn about Italian soft drinks like "Chinotto" and explore the Roman neighborhood and experience first-hand its diverse culture.
Your first stop will be at a hundred year-old bakery to get to know the pizza in teglia, which is cooked in a special baking tin. You'll learn about the three different ways of making Italian pizzas and their histories. Next you'll visit a typical deli, known as a gastronomia. Pure, artisan ingredients are used as toppings for various pizzas (margherita, capricciosa etc.) and you'll get to taste them! You'll also improve your cooking skills by learning about which toppings are best to add while baking versus after.
When you have pizza, you've got to taste the typical Italian soft drink Chinotto, first produced in 1932, and follow it up with an Italian gelato (ice cream)! Your guide will take you to the best ice cream shops in Rione Monti, where they make everything by hand with seasonal ingredients. The shops here have been churning out this frozen treasure for decades. You can taste amazing flavors that you never thought could be in ice cream, or try out other cold treats such as granita!
Afterwards, why not try a slice of pizza alla pala? This time it's cooked on a stone oven top. Next we'll take you to the largest and most famous Marian Basilica of Italy, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Pope Francesco celebrated his first Mass as a Pope here. You can also find the tombs of Gianlorenzo Bernini, one of Italy's most important artists, and Paolina Bonaparte, Napoleon's sister. Finally, we'll let you sit and stretch your legs in a "wood oven pizzeria", where you can watch the pizzaiolo, the pizza man, make a classic round pizza!
